CRACKED FIGURE

The representation of visual appearances, developed over the long history of Western painting, gradually came to reveal the material conditions of painting itself—its flatness, medium, and support—as the principles underlying that representation were dismantled from the modern era onward.

In 2012, when I completed the first work in the series, this trajectory from classical to modernist painting—what might be called one of the central narratives in the history of painting—seemed to me like a geological stratum already covered by asphalt. Above it, the paths of contemporary art continue to spread into a vast, indistinct web.

In this context, I sought to pursue a path of my own by bringing two ways of looking—“the gaze that watches an image unravel” and “the gaze that sees an artwork as a material object”—back into perfect representation.

Beginning with a phenomenological observation of pictorial experience, I considered three distinct ways of apprehending a single painting—the presence of the image, its collapse, and the exposure of the painting’s materiality—which ordinarily emerge at different moments as viewing conditions such as distance and angle change. A work in which all three would operate simultaneously, at the same viewing distance, as a single experience—this was the initial conception behind the CRACKED FIGURE series.
